Medical management during the pregnant state differs from practice during the nonpregnant state in its restriction to one half of the population, the female population. Medical practice has to take into account the presence of two patients, mother and fetus. The latter point particularly makes the management of diseases during pregnancy an area of special expertise requiring appropriate knowledge in the fields of internal medicine and fetal-maternal medicine.
